I love our skyline. Love our nightview. I love that feeling that comes over me as I’m headed back into the core, travelling east on the QEW… You know what I mean, right? It’s that lovely moment, passing through Etobicoke when you can just glimpse the CN Tower in the distance, as the highway winds its way back into the city. That anticipation that comes with knowing that in about 10 minutes, you’re gonna be in it. And as the night falls, and the skyline opens up to you, and there, gloriously lit, is your city. The Royal York, The TD building, the Canada Trust building, the Rogers Centre, The ACC, the construction, the condos, the Exhibition grounds, that lone turbine…Home.
I love that feeling.
I totally agree!

I’ve noticed…

That when people move into the city from a small town or from the suburbs, it becomes MONUMENTAL to them that they be seen as “urban”.

This then leads to an almost obsessive need to malign the suburbs and small towns.

Which kinda shows that they may have left the small town, but the mentality remains.

I’ll say it again: The biggest hipsters I’ve ever met didn’t grow up in the city. If you grew up in the city, you wouldn’t have to try so hard.

Can you imagine the time when Toronto police cars were yellow?

Le Coq D’Or in the 1950’s

Global’s Night Moves…I used to watch this when there was no 24 hour TV, and I switched from this to Chuck the Security Guard on City in my insomnia back in the early 80’s. This video says 1986, but it’s more like 1983…the Colonial Tavern was gone by 1986 and it’s shown in this video.

Too bad there isn’t footage showing Le Coq D’Or. I am too young to have ever gone there, but I hear some of the best Blues and Jazz artists played there.

The video takes us North on Yonge, along Gerrard, and then back South on Yonge.

It’s hard to imagine Dundas and Yonge without Dundas Square…but, here it is in the video!

A Canadian interracial marriage story.

National Film Board, 1957…Judy and Roy marry in Toronto.

When I worked in Victims’ Services for the govt, I signed up for the TPS’ news releases via email. I get between 3 and 10 releases a day. It is rare that two days go by without a sexual assault being reported by the police, or a request for assistance in a sexual assault investigation.

Now, as per Stats Can, consider that “less than one in ten sexual assaults were reported to the police.” So take that three or four sexual assault news releases per week, and add somewhere about 36 more per week in Toronto. Those are only the ones the police are emailing about, never mind investigations they don’t release to the media and general public.

We need to reduce this to zero. The best way to do this is to encourage discussion about consent and sex and sexual assault, with men and boys. Men are the best people to initiate these conversations. We have a responsibility to all the women we love to accomplish this, or die trying.

Almost all of the women I know have been sexually assaulted at least once in their lives.

I know very few of these women have ever reported. Including myself.

One of my father’s first jobs in Canada was for The Bagel King at Yorkdale in the late 1960’s. I remember waiting in the car late at night for him to bring out the day old bagels and cakes that they would give to their workers.

This reminds me of the Sir Nicholas Restaurant on Roncys…long gone, but lives in my memories of good Polish food when I was a child. Heavy furniture and candelabras like this all through the place.
